Top 5 Web Design Mistakes Small Businesses Make

If youre a small business owner, your website is the central hub of your company, and its a pivotal part of your marketing and branding.
Potential customers visit your site specifically for its content, meaning its appearance and usability are critical to its success and how those users view your company. However, getting your web design wrong can have a negative impact on your business.
Here are 5 common web design mistakes you must avoid to create a great user experience and grow your bottom line.

1. Poor Navigation

Many small businesses fail to make navigation a priority, but without careful attention to how people navigate your site, you could unintentionally be creating a frustrating experience for any potential visitor. People visit your site for specific information, and if they cannot find it they will quickly go elsewhere, leaving with the impression that your business is disorganized in more than just its website.
A good navigation structure should be seamless and will keep visitors on your site longer, which means potentially more readers, subscribers, sales or leads whichever is your primary objective.
Website navigation affects both usability and accessibility, so its important to make it a primary concern. Most websites and blogs use common navigational techniques that are expected by the average visitor. The pages and sections of the site should be easy and logical for visitors to maneuver. Dont make your visitors think about how to navigate your site; it should be effortless and natural.
There are several principles you can follow to create an effective navigation structure:
  • Use icons to aid navigation. Theyre both visually appealing and easy to use and understand.
  • Create logical groups of related links, with the most important links on the top-level navigation bar and functional (dashboard, account, settings, etc.) and legal (copyright, privacy, terms) located elsewhere.
  • Provide location information so users know where they are on any given page and how to proceed to another area of the website. This can be achieved by using Breadcrumb navigation.

2. No Clear Calls To Action

The fundamental error of many small business websites is the lack of a clear call to action. Weve all seen bland small-business brochure websites with nothing but endless descriptive paragraphs. If you arent leading users to commit to an action (buy a product, contact you or subscribe, for example), then you are losing them.
Driving traffic to your website is important, but that traffic is useless if your primary call to action is a plain click here link buried in a sea of text. Call-to-action buttons are a great way to grab the users attention, and these buttons can be the key to higher conversions. Investing time and consideration into creating successful calls to action can help guide users and address their needs while achieving your own business goals.
Its important to keep the following best practices in mind when creating an optimal call to action:
  • The design of a call to action can be broken down into 4 simple elements  size, shape, color, and position. Each plays a vital part in determining how effective the call to action is in directing the user.
  • Dont make your users work or think, or theyll leave. Its not that they arent smart, its that they want access to information quickly without spending unnecessary time searching for it.
  • Dont overdo it with multiple, competing calls to action on every page. Decide what your primary target is and then define a clear objective per page. Your content should have answered, Whats in it for me? and your call to action should now answer, What do I do now?

3. Color & Contrast

Color and contrast arent usually high up on the list of priorities for a small business owner when it comes to creating a website. But it should be, because if your website text does not have sufficient contrast compared to its background, people will have difficulty reading your content, especially people with poor vision or color-blindness.
Aside from plain readability, color and contrast are important because they can be used to create visual interest and direct the attention of the user. It can equally be effective in organizing and defining the flow and hierarchy of a page, and its therefore an essential principle to pay attention to during the design process. Here are some tips:
  • Using a free a Color Contrast tool (which conforms to accepted standards) you can easily check to see how the contrast on your website measures up.
  • Research how major sites use color and contrast to improve readability and highlight specific sections, and use this knowledge to experiment with color schemes.
  • One of best ways to enhance contrast is by creating size differences between elements, making some things appear larger than others. This works especially well within a minimal color scheme, and it means you dont have to necessarily rely on color.

4. Content, Content, Content

People visit your website for its content, and how that is structured is a huge factor in its success or failure. Unfortunately, an overwhelming number of small businesses get so caught up in overloading the user with information that they overlook how that information is presented.
Most people do not read unless its absolutely necessary, and they prefer to scan through information quickly to get to the points of interest. This is why its so important to establish a strong visual content hierarchy so users can quickly scan your site and sifting through relevant information. A logical content hierarchy also acts as a guide through each page and creates a more enjoyable user experience.
So when focusing on your content, its best to keep in mind these three tips:
  • White space is possibly the most important factor to consider. It will allow the user to focus on the meaningful content within each section.
  • Break up lengthy pieces of information into digestible blocks of text, utilizing headings, sub-headings, bullets, blockquotes and paragraphs.
  • Readable content is important, so use a good line height that is large enough to make content scannable. Margins and letter spacing also need to be taken into consideration.
When talking about content, spelling and grammar cannot be underestimated.

5. Clutter

We all know at least one small business website that seems to include everything but the proverbial kitchen sink. Many small business owners tend to cram as much as they can onto a single page the end result is a busy, cluttered and unreadable page.
The more extraneous items there are on a web page, the more unprofessional it looks, and it becomes overwhelming, confusing and distracting for the user. A cluttered website will also affect traffic because visitors wont return if they cant understand or follow the content, which leads to low traffic, a high bounce rate and possibly a poor Page Rank.
Clutter also applies to images. Too many can be a huge distraction and just plain annoying. Images should be used to illustrate, capture attention and guide the user where required.
Follow these guidelines for a more streamlined visitor experience:
  • Challenge every item on each page and ask, Does it really need to be there? Does it serve a specific purpose? Can I live without it?
  • The key is to aid the visitor in finding the information theyre looking for, so make sure to differentiate between areas of content, advertisements and promotions.
  • Prioritize your content and decide what is the most important to your visitor and potential customer and sell it well.
Even the greatest content can become lost in a mess of words and graphics, so de-cluttering is essential.
These are just five web design mistakes that many small businesses make. What other mistakes have you noticed on small business websites?

How Do I Monetize A Classifieds Website?

Id like to setup a classifieds website for a fairly large community. The community actually had one, but the person running it moved away and shut down the site. People keep asking for a new one so I think itll be a good opportunity.
My question is how can I fully monetize the opportunity. I was thinking of charging local businesses to place small ads on the site similar to your sponsors section. Any other thoughts?
There are several ways to monetize a classifieds website, and the best model will depend on the nature and size of your website. Here are some examples:
1. The Traditional Model: Classifieds emerged in newspapers and other print publications. The model was to charge people who wanted to place an ad in the classifieds (usually according to the length of the ad, with options to highlight it). This model can work on the Internet as well, but you would need to have a very specific focus and a large audience to showcase the ads, else advertisers would not get a good return on their investment.
2. The Craigslist Model: Craigslist revolutionized the classifieds industry because it created a really popular classifieds website where posting ads is essentially free. You can browse through different categories and cities, and the volume of ads youll find is always amazing. How do they make money? By charging money for ads in very specific categories (e.g., job postings and brokered rentals). The model is quite effective because they only charge people who have a lot to gain from using their services, and hence are willing to pay for it.
3. The Inverse Model: Depending on the nature of the ads being placed on your website you could actually make the viewers of the ads pay. For example, there are freelancing job boards that charge for people who want to see the contact information of the job seekers. The advantage of this model is that posting an ad becomes free, and it increases the overall activity on the website.
4. The Sponsorship Model: As mentioned in the question itself, another possible model is to let everything be free, while getting sponsors who want to showcase their products and services to your audience. This model works well if your website has a local focus. For instance, if the classifieds website is for your local soccer community it woundt be hard to get a sports store to sponsor it.
Keep in mind that you can also experiment with two models at the same time, and that you can also start with one and migrate to another one over time. For instance, I would definitely start with the last model, making everything free. This is to make sure that people would join and participate on the website. Then once you reach a critical mass of users you could consider start charging for specific parts of the website.

How To Start A Blog For Free

Learning to blog is fun and easy, and it doesnt even have to cost a cent. In this post Im going to show you how to start a blog for free (maybe you dont need this info, but I am sure you know someone who does).
One of the great things about blogging is that anyone can do it and the barrier to entry is nill, nought, zip, zilch assuming that you have or have access to a computer with an internet connection. I dont know many people without a computer that dont have an internet connection. Blogging is as easy as playing with Lego.
I have always been the creative type. When I was younger I used to love playing with my Lego, I was totally awesome at it and could build models on the back of the boxes without any instructions. I even built a whole Lego land from scratch it was huge.
When I grew up and got my own PC I discovered web design. Back when I first got on the net blogs and blogging never existed so I would build my web sites from scratch. My first web site was horrible. Then blogging came along, it took off like a rocket and soon the net was soon littered with blogs. It didnt take long before blogs became a great alternative source of information besides magazines, newspapers and other media outlets.
What I have learned over the years is that building a blog is pretty easy. You dont need to be a designer or know how to code (although it does help if you can design and code) because building a blog is like building a Lego model.
How is building a blog like building a Lego model? Lego models are made up of lots of little Lego parts that fit together to make a model, you can even buy individual bricks and elements to build your own model. A blog is like a Lego model except that the themes, posts, pictures, plugins and widgets etc are the building blocks. Although you still have to know how to put those blocks together and combine elements to build a good blog. And blogging is free, Lego is really expensive these days!
Anyone can play with Lego and build things without any knowledge but it doesnt mean that they can or will build anything really cool. Blogging is the same, you can take a theme and build a blog but that doesnt mean its going to be any good. I have seen plenty of good themes totally murdered by bad design choices, cheesy useless plugins, ugly colour schemes that make my eyes bleed.
When you first install WordPress you get a pretty plain default theme, themes are like a Lego base plate that you build things on top of. Plugins, widgets, and posts are the building blocks for your chosen theme.
Like Lego blogs, plugins, themes & widgets come with instructions but the instructions wont instruct you on building a great blog they will only tell you how to use the theme, plugin, widget or what ever it is. You will have to teach yourself how to build a good blog. There are plenty of blogging resources out there to read and learn from. Reading alone isnt going to make you a good blogger, you will have to get your hands dirty.
Your first blog probably isnt going to be the best and you will make mistakes but dont let that stop you because you wont learn without making mistakes or building bad blogs. Mistakes are good but only if you learn from them. Unless you learn from your mistakes then you are doomed to repeat your past mistakes like ground hog day until you learn from them.
I have built plenty of web sites and blogs, I have also made a lot of mistakes and bad design choices but I have learned from my mistakes and become a better designer. I still have a bunch of web sites, backups of old blogs and mock-ups of web sites that never got built sitting on my hard drive. If I were to look at some of them now I would cringe, one thing that I would see is that my designs and web sites got progressively better.
So you have decided that you want to blog, and you have chosen WordPress great choice! You have two options. Do you drop some cash on a domain name (so you can have www.yourblogname.com) and a web host so you can have full control over your blog? Or do you go with WordPress.com which is free but will get you stuck with www.yourblogname.wordpress.com and very little control over your blog?
The choice is basically WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org, one costs money the other doesnt, one offers full control over your blog the other offers next to no control.
Neither of those options sound appealing? No money? No problems. There is a third option if you want full control over your blog but have no money to drop on a domain and web hosting. There are many free hosting plans out there. Just Google free web hosting and youll find them. Although there are a few things to be aware of.
  • The host needs to support PHP version 5.2.4 or greater and MySQL version 5.0 or greater. What you will get is generally listed under Features, What youll get, Spesifications just have a poke around any decent free web host will list what they offer
  • If you choose to find your own free hosting be aware that some free web hosts will require that you let them put advertisements on your site, there are some free hosts that dont require you to advertise so check carefully before signing up.
  • There is one trade off, because you are using free hosting you will get stuck with whatever URL they choose to let you have, usually its just a sub domain like www.yourblogname.zymichost.com, or www.yourblogname.freeaspwebhosting.org. Although its an acceptable trade off for having full control over your blog.
If you are starting a blog for the first time, want a personal blog and dont care if the URL doesnt look that professional or just want to learn before you drop some hard earned cash on a domain name and hosting this is a great way to get started. If you start a blog get lucky and it becomes popular you can always buy a domain some better web hosting and move your blog to your new host.

One Tip that may Increase your AdSense Income

I have been running an experiment around Google AdSense for the past few weeks, based on the recommendations of RN, and it looks like that the change has had a positive effect on the CPM of the ad unit where that change was applied.
The experiment goes something like this.
I have a 300250 ad unit in the right sidebar of this site thats placed above the fold and it serves both image (rich media) and text ads. The ad unit is enabled for placement targeting so an advertiser can easily target it for display campaigns through Google AdWords.
Now lets assume that the average CPM for this ad unit, according to Google AdSense reports, is $5.
To get higher CPM ads, I created a simple rule that blocked Google ads from showing up unless their CPM was, say, $6 or about 20% higher than the current average value. If the CPM was lower, one of these in-house ads was displayed to the visitor instead of the AdSense ad.
This experiment has been live for about 8 weeks now and I think it did help in pushing-up the CPMs for that unit. Why? I dont have an exact answer but probably because the Google ad now has to compete with an external ad in order to show up on the site and thus it raises its own CPM to outbid your in-house ad.
The other advantage is that instead of serving low-paying display ads, I can use that space to promote my older content to new visitors who may have otherwise missed those stories.
If you would like to try something similar on your own blog, read the Google DFP tutorial to understand how you may serve in-house ads alongside Google AdSense. Set a CPM threshold that is 10-20% higher than your current average and run the experiment for at least 10-15 days. Good luck!

Ways to Grow Your Email List

If you dont have an email list yet make sure to check my Email Marketing Basics post. It has all the information you need to get started. If you already have one but are trying to grow it, below youll find 5 methods you can use.
1. Offer a freebie
By far the best way to get people joining your email list is to offer them something in return. The most common freebie around the web is an ebook, but you could also come up with audio files (e.g., interviews), templates (e.g., a WordPress theme), or even a free course that will be delivered via follow-up messages on the newsletter itself.
Obviously once you have the freebie ready to go you should promote it to make sure people are aware of it.
2. Create a detailed landing page
A couple of days ago I saw a post on John Chows blog titled How to Quadruple Your Email Opt In Rate. The post highlights how the guys from Aweber performed a make-over on their landing page, basically adding more information to encourage people to subscribe. The result? A boost of 321% in the number of sign-ups.
Once you have your landing page up and running and you can traffic to it from a wide range of sources, including social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, as well as guest posts.
3. Host a contest
First of all you need to figure out a prize. It could be an advertising spot on your site, a review, a digital product or even a physical one (e.g., an iPod). Once you have it announce the contest on your blog, and explain that in order to participate on the random draw for the prize your readers simply need to join your email newsletter.
4. Get affiliates to promote your list
Most email marketing services allow you to track the sources of new subscribers. By using this feature you could recruit friends and affiliates who would be willing to promote your email list in exchange for prizes or money. I have seen people offering a certain amount per subscriber (e.g., $0.10) or larger prizes for the top performing affiliates, and both methods worked pretty well.
5. Cross promote with another newsletter
A very cost effective way to grow the size of your email list is to find other bloggers/webmasters and propose a cross promotion deal. That is, you plug their lists for your subscribers and they will do the same with their subscribers. This wont cost anything and both of you will end up with new subscribers.

First Impressions on Websites Can Be Misleading

One thing that makes online marketing particularly complex (and interesting) is the fact that you can never be sure about whats going on behind the scenes of a certain website. That is, you cant know how many visitors the site has, how much it makes per month and so on. In fact sometimes the first impression youll get can be quite misleading, and here are some examples:
Number of Comments
Until a couple of years ago the average number of comments a blog would get per post was a good indicator of its traffic. Today, however, I dont think this rule holds true. For instance, the number of comments on DBT declined over the past couple of years, but the traffic and earnings increased steadily, and I see this same pattern on many other blogs.
Design Quality
Most people tend to think that websites with awesome designs must also have a huge amount of traffic, but this is not always the case. I have seen plenty of ugly websites that have really high traffic (for instance, The Best Page In the Universe), and shiny websites that no one visits. The latter is more common, as there are many people who know how to design well (or has money to pay for it) and believe that the design alone will bring the traffic, which is far from the truth.
Content Freshness
Same story with the freshness of the content. A site that has been updated 20 times over the past month must be booming, while one that was last updated in 2005 must be dead, right? Again, not always the case. Theres a thing called evergreen content, and if a certain site has plenty of it and a lot of authority it will keep receiving traffic from Google even if the last time it was updated was ages ago.
No Ads
What if you dont see banner ads around, does it mean the site is not being monetized? Not at all, as webmasters and online marketers are pretty clever in the ways they monetize their properties. Just think about affiliate links, pop-unders, exit ads and so on.
Bottom Line: Understanding whats going on with a website is not a trivial matter, so be careful with your evaluations, whether you are using them to purchase websites, to find partners, to find places to advertise your products or merely to study the tactics of your competitors.

How to Upgrade WordPress via SSH

For most WordPress users updating to a newer version is pretty straight forward: log into the WordPress dashboard, click on Updates and then select the option to update WordPress. Within 10 seconds or so you are set.
Depending on the settings of your server, though, the automatic update option will not work. In this case youll need to perform the update manually, which means deleting and uploading the files via FTP, which takes a lot of time (around 15 minutes for all WordPress files with an average Internet connection).
Is there a better way? Yep, and its called SSH. SSH stands for Secure Shell, and its a protocol for remote communications. Using this protocol you can basically connect to your server and perform commands as if you were using the computer personally.
Warning: Make sure to backup all your data and databases before trying any type of update, as you could mess things up and lose everything. Try the stuff below at your own risk.
First of all you need to contact your hosting provider to make sure you have SSH enabled on your account. After that you can login to your server by typing
ssh user@mydomain.com
on the command line, and after that youll be prompted to put your password. Usually the user and password are the same of your FTP account, but they might be different.
Once you are logged in you need to browse to your public_html directory, which is usually where WordPress is installed. If you are using a sub-directory, navigate to it. Then type this to download the latest WordPress files:
wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
After that type this to decompress the file:
tar xfz latest.tar.gz
Next we need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes directories, which you can do with the following commands:
rm -rf ./wp-includes
rm -rf ./wp-admin
Now you want to move the new wp-admin and wp-include directories to the root, so type the following commands:
mv ./wordpress/wp-admin ./
mv ./wordpress/wp-includes ./
Finally, go inside the WordPress directory with
cd wordpress
and copy its content to the parent directory (i.e., the root) overwriting the old ones:
cp -rpf -f * ../
Finally, type cd .. to go back to the root directory and delete both the tar file you downloaded and the wordpress directory with this:
rm -rf ./wordpress/
rm -f latest.tar.gz
Thats it. All you have to do now is to run the upgrade script on your WordPress install (i.e., domain.com/wp-admin/upgraded.php).

WordPress or Blogger ?

Many of the people get confused which platform to use , to build their website. Yes it may be for personal or for business purpose .There are may other platforms to create a website but I think worpress.com and blogger.com have hit the market since their existence. Lets go to the concept now.
Blogger is owned by Google and its free. You dont have to invest a single penny, while you need something to invest if you want to go through wordpress.Blogger is the best platform for newbies( new in blogging) to start with as its free and very easy to use.I can tell you my personal experience I started with blogger .You dont need any kind of  website building experience.Dont take blogger lightly its quite handy and can make you shine.Blogger also provides templates(themes).
While searching on google you must have noticed many websites with blogspot.com domain on the first page itself . So without any hard SEO you can make your website to the top because google simply loves blogger as it is owned by Google itself. You love things that belong to you? Yeah ?

WordPress is an organisation and  it has gained a high reputation due to its cutomization properties. You need a hosting to start with wordpress unlike blogger. It has been found through asurvey that majority of the websites use wordpress nearly about 46% . Its only because it has high cutomization. You need to know something about website building tactics if you choose wordpress, with some basic HTML and CSS knowledge.
The search engine optimization in wordpress is upto the throat. WordPress offers many plugin that you can use to make your website fly over google. This is where blogger falls short. With wordpress you can use some plugins like All is One SEO Pack and Keyword tool which will make your website look professional.
In reply to wordpresss plugins blogger has gadgets which is used by webmasters in building theirwebsite. In simple words website integration is above the mark in wordpress. The Gadgets andplugins really help too build the core of your website .If you don have any idea about HTML and PHP they are gonna help you to make diminish the factor.
Both wordpress and blogger provide themes and templates to make your website look eye catchy. But wordpress provides more professional themes than blogger and some quite awesome theme management options. You can change both their domain names to top label domain.
What you go for completely depends upon you but I would choose blogger if  I was someone new into blogging , WordPress at the later stage when I get at least some knowledge about website building .You can fly hing with both blogger and wordpress but you dont have to do a lot of  hard work on blogger when compared with wordpress.Google spiders will always hunt a blogger blog before a wordpress powered blog unless it has some SEO done.

Blogger: Blogger.com

Five Simple Ways to Add Value to Your Content

Are readers getting real value from your posts?
Hopefully, youre sharing ideas, giving advice, or providing inspiration but you could probably still use a few extra tricks to make your posts brilliantly useful for your readers.
Here are five simple ways to add value to any post. (You might want to pick one or two each time you start a new post and you could even go back through your archives and try some of these on older posts, particularly any which get lots of search engine traffic.)

#1: Give Do It Tips

Its easy to give information but are your readers really implementing what they learn from your blog? Make it easy for them with simple tips for putting what they read into practice.

#2: Link to Useful Resources

Whatever youre posting about, links can help give extra value to readers. For instance, if youre writing a guide on setting up a blog, you might want to link to a post on choosing a great domain name.
Some links could go to other posts on your blog (great for decreasing your bounce rate and for improving your SEO). Others could go to posts on other peoples blogs (great for building relationships with fellow bloggers and for showing your expertise by pointing readers to useful resources in your niche).

#3: Add Formatting for Easy Reading

Subheadings, numbered points, bold text, blockquotes all of these make it easier for your reader to take in what youre saying. If you have a long post without much formatting, try breaking it up into sections. Write clear subheadings that let the reader jump straight to the information that interests them.

#4: Give Concrete Examples

When youre explaining a concept, give readers an example. For instance, if youre telling them to write compelling headlines for their landing page, include at least one (and probably more) examples of actual headlines.
Your examples might be screenshots, videos, photos, quotes, case studies anything that helps readers to truly understand what youre saying. Make them specific, and if necessary, take the time to explain them.

#5: Tell Readers Where to Go Next

At the end of your post, make sure you give readers some guidance on what to do next. That might be one suggestion to get them started on implementing your advice, or it could be a link to a related post on your blog.
This is also a great way to incorporate your call to action. Look for ways to encourage readers to do something that benefits you and them: for instance, you might suggest that they join your mailing list for more help with a particular topic, or you could ask them to leave any questions for you in the comments.
So its your turn! Head on over to your blog and take a look at one of your recent posts. Choose one idea from above, and use that to give your post even more value. Then come back and pop a comment below to let us know what you did. If youve got any other great suggestions for adding value to posts, let us know about that too.

Do NOT Submit Your Website To Google!

Some people believe that submitting their website to Google is a good way to get Goog to include their site in the search results. Amazingly, there are still people making money out there by charging for their submit website to Google services. This honestly blows my mind and shows me that people are just taking the word of others instead of testing things themselves.
I have tested Googles tool that allows you to submit your website several times and can tell you that using it is probably the worst thing you can do. The last time I tested it I had to wait six full weeks before Google including my site in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) and the site took more work than usual to rank. That doesnt really make sense and Ill admit that but once you have started a few hundred sites you start to get a feel for how things should happen and that site did not act right for a while.
The Proper Way To Submit A Website To Google
I know that Ive talked about this briefly in posts before, but I wanted to lay this out in a post of its own just to be 100% clear. The best way to get your site into Google is by linking to it from a site that has decent PageRank.
If you dont know what Im talking about, thats perfectly ok. If you can follow these simple instructions youll get into Google within a week and often within 24 hours. Heres the step-by-step:
  1. Write a 300 word article about something related to your website.
  2. Submit that article to EzineArticles.com (PageRank 6) or GoArticles.com (also a PageRank 6).
  3. Make sure when you fill out the about the author box you link back to your site.
  4. For maximum effectiveness, submit one article to EzineArticles.com, and another entirely different article to GoArticles.com.
If you go through that simple process, Google will follow your links from those sites to your site and will index it, which means they will then include it in the SERPs.
Guys every time I do it this way it works. Some of you may think that this doesnt really make sense, in fact whenever I have mentioned this in the past I always get people asking me why Google would have a submission utility if it didnt work well. I dont know and I dont care. I dont spend my time trying to figure out why Google does what they do. I spend it figuring what they do, end of story. This lesson will help you to get into Google more effectively and by all means, dont take my word for it, test it out yourself.
All you have to do to test this out is set up two sites in the same niche. Submit one to Google and link to the other one from Ezine and GoArticles. I can all but guarantee that the second option will give you the best results and if youll follow it, youll always be able to get into Google..
My Theory For Why Google Does This
In my opinion, Google knows that they should be able to find legit sites by following links. If a truly great site is launched, someone will be linking to it from somewhere. If this doesnt happen, Google probably assumes that the site is going to be of lesser quality. The best sites ALWAYS get linked to because people like them. If you dont get linked to and have to rely on their submission service, I think that tells Google that your site is small time.
Getting Your Site To RANK Well In Google
I would imagine that if youre trying to learn how to submit your site to Google, you would probably like to get some traffic from them. The fact that youre in Google doesnt necessarily mean that youre going to get any traffic but if you know what youre doing Google can be a huge traffic source.
Ive built an entire program, with everything from video lessons, comprehensive written guides, supporting keyword research and link building software to a totally supportive communityall designed to help you get traffic from Google and turn that traffic into money.
Its called The Keyword Academy Pro, and over 1,400 people are members each working steadily toward their online traffic and income goals. Best of all you get to take the program for a test drive with a totally free and unrestricted 30 day trial. Check it out!

6 Ways to Speed Up Your Site

The load time of websites is one of the most important factors affecting its usability; most Internet users will just skip a site altogether if it fails to load within a couple of seconds. Below you will find the summary of the Speed Up Your Site series. Those are simple yet effective ways to make sure that your website is running fast. You can click on each point to read the article with comments from the readers.
  1. Optimize Images: always use the Save for the web feature included on image editing software. Images represent the heavier load on virtually any website so make sure you are optimizing them. Alternatively you can also turn to an online image optimizer.
  2. Image Formats: apart from optimizing images it is important that you choose the right format. JPEG format is suitable for photographs or true-color images. The GIF format should be used with flat-color images like logos or buttons. PNG works very similar to GIF but it supports more colors.
  3. Optimize Your CSS: most websites are designed with CSS nowadays. Make sure to aggregate and clean your CSS. CleanCSS is an online tool that will merge similar selectors, remove useless properties and remove the whitespace from your code.
  4. Use a Slash on Your Links: when a user opens a link on the form http://www.domain.com/about the server will need to figure what kind of file or page is contained on that address. If you include a slash (/) at the end of the link the server will already know that this is a directory page, reducing the load time of the site.
  5. Use the Height and Width Tags: many people forget to add the Height and Width tags on image codes. Those tags will make sure that the browser knows the size of the image before loading it. The result is that it will reserve a spot for the images while loading the rest of the page, speeding up the whole process.
  6. Reduce the HTTP Requests: when opening a web page every object (images, scripts and the line) will require a round trip to the server. This latency can add several seconds to the load time of your site. Make sure to reduce the number of objects and to combine CSS files and scripts together.

43 Web Design Mistakes You Should Avoid

There are several lists of web design mistakes around the Internet. Most of them, however, are the Most common or Top 10 mistakes. Every time I crossed one of those lists I would think to myself: Come on, there must be more than 10 mistakes. Then I decided to write down all the web design mistakes that would come into my head; within half an hour I had over thirty of them listed. Afterwards I did some research around the web and the list grew to 43 points.
The next step was to write a short description for each one, and the result is the collection of mistakes that you will find below. Some of the points are common sense, others are quite polemic. Most of them apply to any website though, whether we talk about a business entity or a blog. Enjoy!
1. The user must know what the site is about in seconds: attention is one the most valuable currencies on the Internet. If a visitor can not figure what your site is about in a couple of seconds, he will probably just go somewhere else. Your site must communicate why I should spend my time there, and FAST!
2. Make the content scannable: this is the Internet, not a book, so forget large blocks of text. Probably I will be visiting your site while I work on other stuff so make sure that I can scan through the entire content. Bullet points, headers, subheaders, lists. Anything that will help the reader filter what he is looking for.
3. Do not use fancy fonts that are unreadable: sure there are some fonts that will give a sophisticated look to your website. But are they readable? If your main objective is to deliver a message and get the visitors reading your stuff, then you should make the process comfortable for them.
4. Do not use tiny fonts: the previous point applies here, you want to make sure that readers are comfortable reading your content. My Firefox does have a zooming feature, but if I need to use on your website it will probably be the last time I visit it.
5. Do not open new browser windows: I used to do that on my first websites. The logic was simple, if I open new browser windows for external links the user will never leave my site. WRONG! Let the user control where he wants the links to open. There is a reason why browsers have a huge Back button. Do not worry about sending the visitor to another website, he will get back if he wants to (even porn sites are starting to get conscious regarding this point lately).
6. Do not resize the users browser windows: the user should be in control of his browser. If you resize it you will risk to mess things up on his side, and what is worse you might lose your credibility in front of him.
7. Do not require a registration unless it is necessary: lets put this straight, when I browse around the Internet I want to get information, not the other way around. Do not force me to register up and leave my email address and other details unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e. unless what you offer is so good that I will bear with the registration).
8. Never subscribe the visitor for something without his consent: do not automatically subscribe a visitor to newsletters when he registers up on your site. Sending unsolicited emails around is not the best way to make friends.
9. Do not overuse Flash: apart from increasing the load time of your website, excessive usage of Flash might also annoy the visitors. Use it only if you must offer features that are not supported by static pages.
10. Do not play music: on the early years of the Internet web developers always tried to successfully integrate music into websites. Guess what, they failed miserably. Do not use music, period.
11. If you MUST play an audio file let the user start it: some situations might require an audio file. You might need to deliver a speech to the user or your guided tour might have an audio component. That is fine. Just make sure that the user is in control, let him push the Play button as opposed to jamming the music on his face right after he enters the website.
12. Do not clutter your website with badges: first of all, badges of networks and communities make a site look very unprofessional. Even if we are talking about awards and recognition badges you should place them on the About Us page.
13. Do not use a homepage that just launches the real website: the smaller the number of steps required for the user to access your content, the better.
14. Make sure to include contact details: there is nothing worse than a website that has no contact details. This is not bad only for the visitors, but also for yourself. You might lose important feedback along the way.
15. Do not break the Back button: this is a very basic principle of usability. Do not break the Back button under any circumstance. Opening new browser windows will break it, for instance, and some Javascript links might also break them.
16. Do not use blinking text: unless your visitors are coming straight from 1996, that is.
17. Avoid complex URL structures: a simple, keyword-based URL structure will not only improve your search engine rankings, but it will also make it easier for the reader to identify the content of your pages before visiting them.
18. Use CSS over HTML tables: HTML tables were used to create page layouts. With the advent of CSS, however, there is no reason to stick to them. CSS is faster, more reliable and it offers many more features.
19. Make sure users can search the whole website: there is a reason why search engines revolutionized the Internet. You probably guessed it, because they make it very easy to find the information we are looking for. Do not neglect this on your site.
20. Avoid drop down menus: the user should be able to see all the navigation options straight way. Using drop down menus might confuse things and hide the information the reader was actually looking for.
21. Use text navigation: text navigation is not only faster but it is also more reliable. Some users, for instance, browse the Internet with images turned off.
22. If you are linking to PDF files disclose it: ever clicked on a link only to see your browser freezing while Acrobat Reader launches to open that (unrequested) PDF file? That is pretty annoying so make sure to explicit links pointing to PDF files so that users can handle them properly.
23. Do not confuse the visitor with many versions: avoid confusing the visitor with too many versions of your website. What bandwidth do I prefer? 56Kbps? 128Kbps? Flash or HTML? Man, just give me the content!
24. Do not blend advertising inside the content: blending advertising like Adsense units inside your content might increase your click-through rate on the short term. Over the long run, however, this will reduce your readership base. An annoyed visitor is a lost visitor.
25. Use a simple navigation structure: sometimes less is more. This rule usually applies to people and choices. Make sure that your website has a single, clear navigation structure. The last thing you want is to confuse the reader regarding where he should go to find the information he is looking for.
26. Avoid intros: do not force the user to watch or read something before he can access to the real content. This is plain annoying, and he will stay only if what you have to offer is really unique.
27. Do not use FrontPage: this point extends to other cheap HTML editors. While they appear to make web design easier, the output will be a poorly crafted code, incompatible with different browsers and with several bugs.
28. Make sure your website is cross-browser compatible: not all browsers are created equal, and not all of them interpret CSS and other languages on the same way. Like it or not, you will need to make your website compatible with the most used browsers on the market, else you will lose readers over the long term.
29. Make sure to include anchor text on links: I confess I used to do that mistake until some time ago. It is easier to tell people to click here. But this is not efficient. Make sure to include a relevant anchor text on your links. It will ensure that the reader knows where he is going to if he clicks the link, and it will also create SEO benefits for the external site where the link is pointing.
30. Do not cloak links: apart from having a clear anchor text, the user must also be able to see where the link is pointing on the status bar of his browser. If you cloak your links (either because they are affiliate ones or due to other reasons) your site will lose credibility.
31. Make links visible: the visitor should be able to recognize what is clickable and what is not, easily. Make sure that your links have a contrasting color (the standard blue color is the optimal most of the times). Possibly also make them underlined.
32. Do not underline or color normal text: do not underline normal text unless absolutely necessary. Just as users need to recognize links easily, they should not get the idea that something is clickable when in reality it is not.
33. Make clicked links change color: this point is very important for the usability of your website. Clicked links that change color help the user to locate himself more easily around your site, making sure that he will not end up visiting the same pages unintentionally.
34. Do not use animated GIFs: unless you have advertising banners that require animation, avoid animated GIFs. They make a site look unprofessional and detract the attention from the content.
35. Make sure to use the ALT and TITLE attributes for images: apart from having SEO benefits the ALT and TITLE attributes for images will play an important role for blind users.
36. Do not use harsh colors: if the user is getting a headache after visiting your site for 10 consecutive minutes, you probably should pick a better color scheme. Design the color palette around your objectives (i.e. deliver a mood, let the user focus on the content, etc.).
37. Do not use pop ups: this point refers to pop ups of any kind. Even user requested pop ups are a bad idea given the increasing amount of pop blockers out there.
38. Avoid Javascript links: those links execute a small Javascript when the user clicks on them. Stay away from them since they often create problems for the user.
39. Include functional links on your footer: people are used to scrolling down to the footer of a website if they are not finding a specific information. At the very least you want to include a link to the Homepage and possibly a link to the Contact Us page.
40. Avoid long pages: guess what, if the user needs to scroll down forever in order to read your content he will probably just skip it altogether. If that is the case with your website make it shorter and improve the navigation structure.
41. No horizontal scrolling: while some vertical scrolling is tolerable, the same can not be said about horizontal scrolling. The most used screen resolution nowadays is 1024 x 768 pixels, so make sure that your website fits inside it.
42. No spelling or grammatical mistakes: this is not a web design mistake, but it is one of the most important factors affecting the overall quality of a website. Make sure that your links and texts do not contain spelling or grammatical mistakes.
43. If you use CAPTCHA make sure the letters are readable: several sites use CAPTCHA filters as a method of reducing spam on comments or on registration forms. There is just one problem with it, most of the times the user needs to call his whole family to decipher the letters.
